Latent Print Laboratory

The latent print laboratory houses three alternative light source dark rooms for latent print enhancement and imaging, as well as two cyanoacrylate fuming chambers. Students gain hands-on experience with the different techniques that are used to process latent prints on evidence collected from a crime scene.

  • Laboratory classroom with 6 benches in the room and a fume hood in the background.

The latent print laboratory is the host of various classes such as latent fingerprint and biology of the grave. Latent fingerprint teaches different collection methods and processing techniques of fingerprints. Biology of the grave covers anthropology and entomology with hands-on experience taking place at the Crime Scene Complex.

  • Two white instruments used to develop fingerprints.

Cyanoacrylate (Superglue) Fuming Chambers are used for developing fingerprints. The superglue is heated up into a vapor to cover the fingerprint with a thin layer aiding in the fingerprint development.

  • Small room with an alternative light source on a desk.

An ALS, Alternative Light Source, is used for various purposes in forensic science. In the laboratory, students are taught how to apply the benefits of the ALS to latent fingerprints.

  • Small room with computer and photography set up.

In the latent print lab, students learn how to photograph fingerprints to aid in comparison.

  • Small storage room with fume hood, bench, superglue and fuming chamber.
