Basic Bloodstain Pattern Recognition

This 40-hour course will provide a firm understanding of bloodstain pattern analysis through a unique blend of:

  • Theory enriched study broken down into BPA history, biochemistry, physics, fluid dynamics, and trigonometry
  • Hands-on practical experiments with mammalian blood
  • Case presentations

The course is based on a well-established curriculum and will utilize unique, singular-use experimental apparatuses that have been designed and refined over the years to provide the best practical hands-on learning experience available.

The curriculum has been peer reviewed by experts in their own right and will be provided to the student in a color-enriched, comb-bound manual, designed to be used as a reference guide throughout the students’ career.

The course syllabus has been on file with the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts (IABPA) and with the International Association for Identification (IAI) since May 2006.  It is approved for BPA Certification with the IAI and meets membership criteria with the IABPA.  It should be noted that the presented material is ever evolving and is under constant revision and refinement by the instructor.  In November 2014, the IABPA reviewed and re-approved the course. The following year the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) recognized the course for continuing educational hours.
