FIS Summer Internship

All students in the Forensic and Investigative Science Program are required to complete a 270 hour internship before the start of their senior year. This past summer, Cameron Hartwig, who is currently senior in the program, interned with the El Paso County Office of the Medical Examiner in El Paso, Texas.

Cam Hartwig
Cam’s internship took place within the investigative section of this unit, where he had the opportunity to respond to death scenes within the unit’s jurisdiction.  This unit responds to suspicious deaths, the death of unidentified persons, any death that was unattended by a physician, and any death in a hospital within 24 hours of admission.  During his time there, Cam assisted in photographing and examining the decedents. He said, “It was a great experience. I really learned a lot and could see myself working in the investigative section of a medical examiner’s unit in my career.”

The internship experience allows students to gain insight to the tasks that a forensic scientist performs on a daily basis. For more information about summer internships, please click here.
