Information for Parents
Selecting a university is a family decision that represents years of financial and emotional support and commitment. We welcome inquiries from parents and family about our program, faculty, and facilities. Feel free to contact us with any other questions you may have about the program.
Internships
The internship that students are required to do often generates many questions. For more information, refer to the internship gateway by clicking here… This internship is one of the key features that distinguishes WVU from other schools. For most students, a successful internship is the gateway to their first job and the program invests significant time preparing students for this experience. Most internships are unpaid and we understand the significant financial burden this can present to students and their families and we constantly work to do whatever we can to minimize these costs while insuring students get the best internship placement for their career goals and aspirations. The internship is the most crucial six hours of credit students earn in the program and more than any other class represents the first step in the transition from student to professional. Rather than a cost, it is an investment that every year leads to more first job placements than any other factor in a student’s academic experience.
Parental Involvement
West Virginia University is a student centered institution that recognizes the importance of family and parents in student success. Some of the services offered by the University include Visitation Days and an active Parents Club.
Every fall, the program sponsors a Family Weekend picnic featuring faculty and guest speakers, tours of our facilities, and great food and fun. The guest speaker (normally an individual with working forensic experience) will spend the day talking with students and discussing forensic and investigative science careers.
Every spring we hold our annual graduation breakfast that highlights the incredible accomplishments of our graduates with their families. In May, the breakfast will be held the morning of commencement, allowing for a full day of fun and celebration.
